"IF I'D known I would have lived this long, I would have taken care of myself," Dick Van Dyke once joked.

- MARION McMULLEN

The American movie star revealed earlier this year that his secret to staying fit and healthy was going to the gym three times a week and working out.

He said he also did a lot of stretching and yoga, used weighted machines and then swam at home before getting back into bed for a nap. His wife Arlene Silver said he danced from one gym machine to another.

Dick was born on December 13, 1925, and his career has spanned more than seven decades and earned him an array of awards including four Emmys, a Tony for Bye Bye Birdie and a Grammy for the Mary Poppins soundtrack.

He has also been inducted into the Television Hall of Fame and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. However, when he attended the ceremony for his star in 1993 it was discovered his name had been misspelled “Vandyke”.

He laughed and drew a slash on the star and it was later corrected and replaced.

Dick was inspired by Stan Laurel and became friends with the comedy star after he found his name in the phone book and called him.

He even delivered the eulogy at Stan's funeral.
