Angara backs new school buildings in Mandaue City

|August 19, 2025
Education Secretary Sonny Angara has expressed full support for the construction of new school facilities in Mandaue City, including an extension building for Don Gerardo Llamera National High School in Barangay Opao and a proposed 12-storey medium-rise school building in Barangay Paknaan.
-
During his visit yesterday, August 18, at Don Gerardo Llamera National High School, Angara approved the two proposals presented by Mandaue Lone District Rep. Emmarie “Lolypop” Ouano-Dizon and Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano.
Angara, however, clarified that the Department of Education (DepEd) typically funds only two or three major projects each year and that he still needs to review whether other applications had been approved ahead of Mandaue’s. Despite this, he assured Mayor Ouano that the city will remain a priority.
Dizon said the 12-storey school building in Barangay Paknaan—featuring 42 classrooms—will help ease overcrowding at Paknaan National High School, where 6,172 students from kindergarten to high school are currently packed into undersized classrooms on a single site.
She noted that she had long been requesting approval for the project, which had been pending for some time. With Angara’s verbal approval, she said she finally felt relieved.
