ROAD STRAIN | Hinjawadi-Wakad stretch sees 36 deaths as police cite bad roads, heavy vehicles and rampant violations
Transport safety in Pune’'s IT hub remains a major concern, with 36 people losing their lives in road accidents this year.
Data from the Pimpri-Chinchwad police show a sharp rise in accidents across Bavdhan, Balewadi, Hinjawadi, Wakad, Punawale, Tathawade and Ravet. Between Jan 1 and Nov 18, 2025, the Hinjawadi and Wakad traffic divisions together recorded 129 accidents, prompting the police and civic authorities to work on a war footing to curb mishaps.
Residents allege unruly driving and declining civic sense are compounded by severely deteriorated roads. They claim stretches vary between good and bad, making commuters speed up and abruptly slow down to avoid potholes. Deepak Singh, a Marunji resident, said, “Every time we drive, we pray to God for safe travels. Driving two-wheelers is especially risky in this area. There is always gravel on roads, and the roads are filled with potholes and damage. On top of that, add traffic. We want solutions, concrete solutions, or people will keep losing lives.”
