Going down to Iceland's fine if it's for fishcake

IT'S never a good look getting stuffed 6-1. But getting battered for half a dozen by Iceland?

- MICHAEL GANNON

Even those in the Scotland Under-21 camp described the defeat as an embarrassment - and rightly so.

No harm to the Icelanders but we're talking about an island with a population less than half of Glasgow and yet they were still good enough to give our boys the runaround.

Granted, it was a young, inexperienced Scotland side but it was still a red neck and one of those results that set the alarm bells ringing.

It's nothing new though. The Scotland kids have managed the odd result here and there, like beating Belgium not so long ago, but they do throw in the occasional stinker.

The thing about the 21s is that it's not the actual results on the pitch that matter too much.

The results that count are how many of these youngsters make it all the way to the senior side.

You'll take the odd sore one if it means two or three of them learn from the botty slapping and bounce back to become established, top-level pros.
