Fought to be the people's champ

A FORMER carpet fitter, Ricky Hatton was known as “The Hitman” and he floored some of the biggest names in boxing.

But outside the ring, the former world champion was open about his battle with depression and addictions to alcohol and drugs.

Hatton won world titles in two divisions and was one of the most popular British boxers, with a cheeky-chappy persona that helped him become the people’s champion, with a vast army of fans.

Born in Stockport, his mum and dad, Carol and Ray, owned four pubs, including the one they lived in and Ricky helped behind the bar along with brother Matthew.
