'It takes an entire village to raise a child'

A recent surge in high-profile criminal cases, both locally and beyond, that involve the abuse and deaths of children has highlighted an unsettling reality: the greatest threats to children's safety may now come from within their own families and communities.

While law enforcement and other state agencies play a role in safeguarding children, many believe that the revival of strong societal values can improve protection and restore a culture of care that can shield future generations.

In recent months, the Mankweng Magistrate's Court has registered several disturbing cases. One involves an 11-year-old girl allegedly raped by a 58-year-old teacher. Another case currently before the same court concerns a stepfather accused of shooting his stepdaughter. Elsewhere, a mother was found guilty of kidnapping and selling her own daughter.
