Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died, the Vatican said in a video statement on Monday.

He was 88, and had recently survived a serious bout of double pneumonia.

President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed AI Nahyan has sent a message of condolences to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, on the passing of Pope Francis, Head of the Vatican.

Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed said, "I extend my deepest condolences to Catholics around the world on the passing of Pope Francis, who dedicated his life to promoting the principles of peaceful coexistence and understanding. May he rest in peace." His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid AI Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed AI Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, sent similar messages of condolence to Cardinal Kevin Farrell.

Sheikh Mohaammed Bin Rashid wrote on his X account, "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis @ Pontifex, a great leader whose compassion and commitment to peace touched countless lives.
