Journey to The Nutcracker
False Bay Echo
|June 11, 2026
Ten-year-old Luphawu Nggonga from Masiphumelele is preparing to step onto the stage after being cast in a production of The Nutcracker.
The auditions took place on Sunday, May 31. According to his mother, Phindiwe, he was extremely nervous before the audition and struggled to sleep the night before.
Luphawu, who attends Kleinberg Primary School in Ocean View, has been taking ballet lessons for almost three years.
His interest in ballet began after he watched children dancing on a television programme.
He asked his mother to learn to dance and was enrolled at the Natalie Lissack School of Ballet shortly afterwards.
Although nervous during his first lesson, Luphawu quickly grew to love ballet and has not looked back.
Described by his mother as a friendly and bubbly child, he enjoys dancing, watching television and spending time with his friends. She said ballet has helped him become more confident and outgoing and has had a positive impact on his school life.
