True grit of Buddies could trump fancy Fir Park football in cup semi

IT'S League Cup semifinal weekend and first up is a fascinating contrast in styles as Motherwell take on St Mirren this evening.

Stephen Robinson led Well into two finals during his spell in charge at Fir Park but is now out to break their hearts by masterminding a Buddies win.

The Northern Irishman knows what it takes to get over the line in these tense games and faces a battle of wits with Jens Berthel Askou at Hampden.

The Dane has done a terrific job since taking charge at Fir Park and Motherwell have received plenty of plaudits for their attractive style of play.

The Steelmen warmed up for Hampden by outclassing Dundee United on Wednesday night in a 2-0 win, which could have been even more emphatic.

But their passing football has sometimes not been rewarded, with Askou's men winning only five of their last 12 games.

St Mirren have claimed just four victories across the same run of fixtures, although they have also probably deserved more for their efforts.
