Damage control

My hair reads like an A to Z of damage. From sun-induced dryness to breakage from heated tools, you name it, I've destroyed my hair with it, and my split ends can tell the tale.

Damage control

Almost everyone will deal with split ends and hair damage at some point, so what can you do about it?

WHAT DAMAGES OUR HAIR?

"Split ends come as a result of broken bonds in the hair fibre," said L'Oreal Editorial Ambassador Adam Reed.

"Healthy hair is like a ladder made of keratin, which is made up of amino acids and peptides.

"Damaged hair has a weak ladder, the rungs (the bonds) are broken and the sides are weak. Also within the structure of the ladder, there are hollow areas making everything weaker."

This can be caused by a number of factors:

Weather

Sun, wind, salt in the sea air.

Technical damage

Over-colouring and bleaching can damage the hair if it isn't looked after before and after an in-salon treatment.

Heated appliances

Excessive styling without using suitable prep products.

Water

Chlorine and chemicals in pools.
