Operation focusses on illicit trade

A MULTIDISCIPLINARY law enforcement operation targeting counterfeit and illicit trade has dealt a major blow to criminal networks in the province, with authorities confiscating illicit goods valued at around R80m during a two-day intelligence-driven operation in Musina and Thohoyandou.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said the joint operation, conducted on March 9-10, involved law enforcement teams visiting 33 shops suspected of trading in counterfeit and illicit goods. The operation was carried out through collaboration between the national illicit goods unit, public order policing units from Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou, detectives, the SANDF, SARS customs and brand protection agencies.
