Concern over design of £6.8m village relief road

An Image Of The Proposed Huncoat Garden Village

LANCASHIRE County Council has voiced major concerns over the proposed £6.8m relief road linked to Huncoat Garden Village - one of the largest housing schemes ever planned in East Lancashire.

The county council, which is responsible for highways, has warned Hyndburn Borough Council that the current plans have an "operationally limiting design" which is not fit for purpose.

The 1.1km single-carriageway road, to be known as Huncoat Lane, would support the £460m development expected to deliver 1,816 new homes.

It would connect the Western Roundabout at the A679 Burnley Road/A56 Accrington bypass, near The Griffin pub, to Altham Lane and represents a key first phase of redeveloping the former power station and colliery sites at Huncoat.

Huncoat ward's Cllr Dave Parkins, who chairs the borough planning committee, says he '100 per cent' endorses LCC's concerns.
