These science-backed tips will help you put your best face forward.
Rinse, Then Dab Use clean hands or a clean microfiber cloth to wash your face, says Ariel Ostad, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. "Washcloths can harbor bacteria and cause irritation," he adds. After rinsing, pat your face dry with a fresh towel; Ostad likes Clean Towels XL (from $18 for 50; cleanskinclub .com), which are disposable and always hygienic. Just don't be rough! Scrubbing and tugging can break down collagen and elastin over time. If you don't trust yourself, you can always air-dry!
Invest in Serums
They are powerful and contain small, highly concentrated molecules that can make a big impact. Vitamin C helps brighten (try: C E Ferulic, $185; skinceuticals.com), retinol helps smooth (Ostad makes a great one: Ret-nia 100, $130; drarielostadskincare.com), and hyaluronic acid helps hydrate (look into: SkinMedica HA5 Hydra Collagen Replenish + Restore Hydrator, $192; dermstore.com). This is where you want to think about splurging, if you can, because good serums deliver good results.
Check the Water The ideal water temp for washing your face is 70°F. Tepid is your sweet spot, as hot water strips your skin's natural oils and cold water doesn't properly lift dirt.
Wait to Rinse
