Free-space optics open a new path for networks

As demand for high-capacity connectivity accelerates, network operators and enterprises are exploring alternatives beyond traditional fibre and radio-based wireless technologies.

One emerging approach gaining attention is free-space optical communication, which uses beams of light to transmit data through the air at fibre-like speeds.

At Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, Taara unveiled an optical wireless platform—Taara Beam— designed to deliver high-speed connectivity across urban environments without trenching fibre or acquiring additional spectrum. The launch marks a milestone for the company, which spun out of X, Alphabet's innovation lab.

While Taara initially focused on bridging connectivity gaps in remote regions, its latest platform targets a different challenge: extending high-capacity networks within cities where fibre infrastructure exists but remains difficult to access. By transmitting data using tightly focused infrared light beams, Taara's technology aims to create a new middle layer of network infrastructure that complements fibre, wireless and satellite connectivity.

THE PERSISTENT CHALLENGE OF LAST-MILE FIBRE

Despite massive global investment in fibre networks, access remains uneven. Even in urban areas with extensive fibre infrastructure, physical and regulatory barriers often prevent connectivity from reaching specific buildings, campuses or network hubs.

Installing fibre often requires excavation, right-of-way approvals and complex construction processes that can take months to complete. In dense urban environments, these hurdles can significantly delay network expansion.
