STRATEGIC RECALIBRATION OF INDIA'S PORT-LED INDUSTRIALISATION AMID HORMUZ CRISIS

Logistics & SCM

|

May 2026

The present instability in West Asia, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, has reinforced one central truth for India: maritime resilience can no longer be built only on cargo-handling efficiency; it must now be built on supply security, cargo diversification, hinterland industrialisation, and route flexibility.

- An article by S Sittarasu, Strategic Advisor, Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust (Kolkata & Haldia Port), Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways

STRATEGIC RECALIBRATION OF INDIA'S PORT-LED INDUSTRIALISATION AMID HORMUZ CRISIS

The Strait remains one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints, carrying more than one-quarter of global seaborne oil trade and about 20 per cent of global LNG trade; in 2024, roughly 83 per cent of LNG moving through Hormuz went to Asian markets, with India among the top destinations.

For India, the exposure is highly sensitive because petroleum, oil and lubricants, including crude, petroleum products, LPG and LNG, already accounted for 254.5 million tonnes, or 29.8 per cent of major port cargo in FY 2024-25. This means any geopolitical shock in Hormuz is not merely an external energy event; it is a direct port, logistics, and industrial-policy event for India.

STRATEGIC MARITIME POSTURE

Politically, this disruption is pushing India toward a more strategic maritime posture under Maritime India Vision 2030 rather than away from it. The government's response already indicates a national security-led logistics doctrine: official briefings this month stated that about 60 per cent of India’s LPG consumption is import-dependent and about 90 per cent of those LPG imports normally move through Hormuz, yet India has simultaneously increased non-Hormuz crude sourcing to around 70 per cent and widened procurement across 41-plus suppliers, while maintaining about 60 days of oil and fuel demand coverage.
