Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also known as radiofrequency neurotomy, utilizes waves to generate energy, which selectively heat a specific region of nerve tissue associated with pain. Heat destroys the nerve endings and helps in reducing the pain for the patient.
History
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has already found application in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, with its initial description for spinal pain treatment credited to Dr Norman C Shealy. Technical improvements, like small diameter equipment and new generators have helped in advancement of the field.
Need for radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
• To reduce pain.
• To improve mobility.
• To get patients off pain medications at the earliest
• To delay surgery
Science behind RFA
Radiofrequency ablation uses heat produced from radio waves which directly act on the target tissues and damages the nerve endings which will stop pain signals to the brain and help in relief of pain to the patient.
