Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), also known as radiofrequency neurotomy, utilizes waves to generate energy, which selectively heat a specific region of nerve tissue associated with pain. Heat destroys the nerve endings and helps in reducing the pain for the patient.

History

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has already found application in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, with its initial description for spinal pain treatment credited to Dr Norman C Shealy. Technical improvements, like small diameter equipment and new generators have helped in advancement of the field.
