Calculate first

“Think about how much you’ll spend on your card each year, and in what categories,” advises money guru Roland Bleyer.

“Is your spend concentrated on supermarket shopping, on purchases in one department store, or on travel?

“Then, when comparing rewards cards, look at each card’s potential to earn points on the spending you do most. Find out how many points you’ll earn per dollar, and take note of any points caps. Some cards limit the number of points you can earn each month or year.”

Check what the points equate to

“Whether you earn one point per dollar or 10 points per dollar, it means nothing if you don’t know what those points equate to,” says Roland. “To find out the value of each point you earn, check the card’s rewards program redemption options.”
