A former hockey goalkeeper forged letters from doctors to defraud a cancer charity

When Kate Hubble told family, friends and colleagues she’d been diagnosed with terminal cancer, they rallied around in support, desperate to help her in any way they could.

Now, two years on, and after opening their hearts and wallets for the former Hockeyroo player, those generous people have been shocked to discover Kate may have been making it up all along.

The Aussie sportswoman last week pleaded guilty to four charges of making and using false documents to obtain a financial benefit from a cancer charity – Redkite – after pretending to be terminally ill.

When the story broke last week, one source close to Kate told Woman’s Day they were still in shock at the news.

“We only found out this morning that her whole cancer diagnosis may be a lie and, to be honest, we’re all just trying to process it,” says the insider, who wishes to remain anonymous.

SUDDEN WEIGHT LOSS

Kate, 32, from Perth but who now lives in Sydney, was a goalie for the successful national women’s hockey team in 2010, although she didn’t play many games.

“Hubs was a big girl and her weight probably held her back,” one hockey insider explains. “She also had a lot of injuries and was seeing doctors a lot.”
