The TV veteran and OK! Chope panelist on being a control freak and how he once ticked off Naomi Campell.
8 DAYS: You’re part of OK Chope!, a comedy panel show that pokes fun at current affairs. How did you get involved with the show?
NAJIP ALI: When the producer called me and explained that the show involves wittiness and intellectual humour, I said, “Are you sure you want me?” (Laughs) It doesn’t sound like a show I’ll be on. So I was surprised. When I was studying in London, I’ve seen such game shows and I loved them. I wondered why Singapore didn’t do a show like that. So, it’s about time.
On the show, host Vernetta introduces you guys as “MDA approved panellists”. Do you have to censor yourself on the show?
I’m used to expressing myself and speaking my mind. But, on the show, I can’t say things like “s***” or “wah lao eh” — words I use every day. One of my catch phrases is: “Eh, s*** you lah! Why like that?” Those words are very part of me. And I’ve to be very careful not to say them.
