It’s natural to be wary of fast-moving technology. “New tools are capable of radically changing the rhythms of our lives,” says expert Cal Newport, Ph.D. “Think what email did to the office, or smartphones to our ability to engage the world.” But when it comes to AI, our anxiety may be misplaced. “Many people in the computer science community feel a lot of the more extreme rhetoric is too heated.” The best way to tame fear of AI, he says, is to take a break from “breathless” news sources. “Unless you're a tech entrepreneur, you don’t need to follow every announcement.”
