From beaches to bustling markets, vibrant Newcastle is perfect for a weekend break
-
More than a beautiful northern city, Newcastle is overflowing with things to see and do. There's history, culture and plenty of fun for all ages, plus with Geordies being known for their friendly nature, you can be sure to receive a warm welcome.
Old and new
Newcastle upon Tyne is a fascinating city to explore on foot. Start at the Quayside, where you'll see traces of Newcastle's industrial past, and enjoy views of the seven spectacular bridges that connect Newcastle to Gateshead. These include the blue-arched Tyne Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, nicknamed the 'blinking eye' because of the unusual way it opens.
The city is named after a castle built by William the Conqueror's son - 'new castle' - and you can still visit parts of its 12th-century replacement, including the Black Gate and the Keep. Find it at the bottom of elegant Grey Street, a curved row of honey-coloured Georgian buildings, now mainly shops, restaurants and bars. At the top is Grey's Monument, a popular Newcastle landmark, and Grainger Market. This covered market is nearly 200 years old and home to the last surviving Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar. Don't miss the cathedral, either. It has a spectacular Lantern Tower, once a guide for ships sailing up the Tyne at night. This story is from the April 08, 2025 edition of Woman's Weekly.
