"I had to help any way I could"

Zibby Owens used her Santa Monica, CA, bookstore to help the community affected by the fires that had threatened her home.

Zibby Owens and her husband, Kyle, watched the Palisades Fire in January from New York City via their phones. Nest camera footage from their part-time home in Pacific Palisades, CA, showed flames soaring over their pool, scampering up their hedges, and lighting up their shed. Thankfully, firefighters were able to save their home and those of some of their neighbors, but others the couple knew weren't so lucky. In the next few days, 5,000 homes in the vicinity would be destroyed, along with some area schools, after a windstorm led to fierce, expansive fires.
