MARGARET REMEMBERS DAVID ‘I’VE LOST ONE HALF OF ME’

Margaret Pomeranz reflects on her At The Movies co-star David Stratton’s remarkable life

He was the no-nonsense film critic who loved to spar with Margaret Pomeranz on the ABC and SBS, and a giant of Australian cinema, who helped shape the careers of some of our most successful directors.

To his family he was an “adored” husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who they shared with Australia over the course of a celebrated 61-year career devoted to his infectious passion for movies.

AUSSIE LEGEND

“David’s passion for film, commitment to Australian cinema, and generous spirit touched countless lives,” his family said in a statement after he died in a hospital near his Blue Mountains home on August 14, 2025 at the age of 85.

After his retirement he continued to watch one new film every day, and rewatch some of his all-time favourite films with his wife Suzie, even after giant cell arteritis caused him to lose sight in one eye and left him with only limited sight in the other.
