Imagine a border brimming with year-round colour and interest. It sounds like a dream, but it is entirely possible - when you choose plants that suit their situation.

Soil and light levels are the main issues a plant for shade will scorch in baking sunshine, and a native of the Mediterranean will sulk in the gloom. There are other considerations, but get the aspect sorted and your border should sing through the seasons.

Start with structure

Choose reliable, hard-working trees and shrubs to give the border some backbone. Anchor plants will bridge seasonal gaps, act as focal points or backdrops and are friends for floppier companions to lean on. They don't have to be evergreen, but should have some presence all year - either an elegant shape, colourful stems, bark or berries that will enhance the space when the flowers have faded.
