Strolling around its pretty streets is the best way to appreciate the city's beauty. A good starting point is, of course, its iconic cathedral, the 15th-century Duomo di Firenze. Exquisite both inside and out, it's worth buying a ticket online (from £12) a week or so in advance to secure entry. Head in an hour before closing time when the crowds are smaller and you can take in the domed ceiling in peace.
