In the 1980s, in Corby, Northamptonshire, the British Steel Corporation shut down a plant, leaving the local council responsible for cleaning up the site. Toxic waste mismanagement led to the exposure of more than 30 women during pregnancy, causing dozens of children to be born with birth defects.
