The everyday lives of ordinary people are turned into something magical by author Anne Tyler. Her novel A Spool of Blue Thread remains one of my all-time favourites and while this is a far briefer story, every word of it is carefully chosen and every detail important. To read one of her books is to walk in the footsteps of other people in a way that feels very real. With wry humour, razor-sharp observations and old-fashioned charm, this is a gentle family drama.
