Kirianna Poole, her husband Lachlan, plus their three kids Riley, Alba and Elisie, travelled New Zealand in their VW Kombi, documenting their adventures for The Slow Road and social media account @theslowroad_. Here, they share where to eat, stay and play in Northland.
Waipu
Located on Bream Bay, the township is situated on a gorgeous white-sand beach that's great for safe swimming, surfing and fishing. Kids will enjoy exploring the rock pools and secluded areas. Horse riding is also a popular activity on the beach at Waipu, and further north at Uretiti and Ruakākā.
We enjoyed a day at Langs Beach, just south of Waipu, before heading to dinner at The Cove, which is a picturesque spot for a meal. Check out the museum, art gallery and – my favourite – the vintage store in the township, to find some treasures.
EXPLORE
For nature enthusiasts, the Waipu Caves are a great exploration. It's a 1.5-hour round trip to discover beautiful stalactites, stalagmites and glow worms. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes – or preferably water shoes – as it can be slippery and don't forget to bring a torch.
• Explore the Waipu Coastal Walkway, between Waipu Cove and Langs Beach, for breathtaking rock formations and beautiful sea views.
• Piroa Falls in the Waipu Gorge Scenic Reserve is an easy track to get to a very pretty waterfall.
• Take in the fresh air, and slow the day down, with a walk along Langs Beach and McKenzie Cove.
EAT
McLeod's Pizza Barn & Brewery was recommended to us and it definitely lived up to its reputation. The craft beer was excellent and went well with the tasty pizza.
• The Bach Café at Ruakākā Beach, further north, is a great spot to enjoy some good coffee and breakfast. Soak up the warm sun while chatting with some friendly locals.
