LOOK TO THE SKIES
If there’s one thing that’s in ample supply in the middle of winter, it’s darkness! Embrace the long nights by taking up star spotting. Look out for shooting stars, constellations such as the Plough and the Great Bear, and the orange glow of the Space Station. e The Yorkshire coast has some of Britain’s starriest skies and
winter’s the best time to marvel at this super-natural phenomenon! Go on a trip to the Milky Way or watch a meteor shower at Dalby Forest’s Observatory. Galloway Forest Park in the Scottish lowlands is home to the UK’s only International Dark Sky Park. Time it right and you might experience the unforgettable magic of the Northern Lights.
GO ON A PICNIC
Pack freshly-made bacon or sausage sandwiches, baked potatoes with grated cheese and chilli-filled pitta pockets, all wrapped in tinfoil and tea towels to keep warm. Remember flasks of hot soup, tea, coffee and, for added punch, mulled wine. Wrap up warm and head to the beach, the park, a beauty spot or throw a picnic rug on the living room floor.
CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN
If, yet again, you devoted two hours of Christmas to watching The Sound Of Music, why not follow Julie Andrews’ lead and take to the hills? Singing is optional, although the sound of music will further enhance the feel-good benefits of being in the great outdoors.
