A GREEN WARRIOR in the heart of the Thar

|October - November 2025
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Jitendra Solanki during a training programme on ecotourism organised by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and was instantly taken in by his deep love for the desert landscape. His knowledge of Rajasthan's wildlife, its resilient people, and the delicate balance that defines this unique ecosystem was truly inspiring. What stood out most was his passion for showcasing a different, more responsible side of Rajasthan, one that celebrates its natural heritage and communities with equal respect and sensitivity. It is for this; we celebrate him today as a Green Warrior.
Q. What first inspired you to become a tourism professional in Rajasthan, and how did the landscape become the heart of your work?
Growing up, I had a deep affection for nature and birds, especially birdwatching in the desert. My background made regular outings difficult until a German guest asked me to guide him on a birdwatching tour in Jorbeed, Bikaner. Impressed, he rewarded me generously, helping me realise I could turn my passion into a profession. This experience showed me I could use my knowledge of local wildlife and landscape to offer tourism while earning a living. My family was initially sceptical, but after seeing the benefits, they became supportive. Today, I work in Jorbeed, where thousands of raptors gather in winter. Though the area is known for being barren with a strong odour, I have come to value it for sustaining these birds. My work enables
Q. In your view, what does responsible tourism mean specifically in the context of Rajasthan’s fragile desert ecosystem?
To me, responsible tourism in Rajasthan's fragile desert ecosystem, called 'Marusthal' or 'land of no life', means adopting sustainable practices that showcase our region’s biodiversity and minimise our impact.
I believe the term 'Marusthal' is a misnomer. Our desert is actually full of life, from small insects to large birds. You just need the right eyes to spot them. As a guide, I have witnessed the richness of the Thar Desert's flora and fauna and strive to share this with my guests.
