It's impossible not to succumb to the magic of music at Bathurst's annual Out West Piano Fest, writes Marian McGuinness.
As winter fades, Bathurst's frosty paddocks pop with spring's bud bursts, while its hills resound with the sound of music. Australia's oldest inland colonial town, Bathurst is a charming destination rich in gold rush history and heritage architecture. Located in NSW's Central Tablelands, it lies about 200 kilometres northwest of Sydney.
A five-minute drive from town you'll find a Georgian-style homestead on the 56 hectares of Blackdown Farm. Once owned by Archibald Prizewinning artist Tim Storrier, it is now home to Anthony and Suzanne Maple-Brown, hosts of the annual Out West Piano Fest. This feast of recitals is held in October in the studio-gallery built by Storrier where you can still see paint splotches on the floor, a connection to the former owner's creativity.
