Cutting through the valley of the Great Glen, the 60-mile Caledonian Canal runs from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east and takes in the lochs of Oich, Lochy and Ness. This is glorious walking country, amid mountains, lochs and wildlife such as kingfishers, swans and even otters.

Walk or cycle (neviscycles.com/bike-hire) the towpath, or canoe the Great Glen Canoe Trail (iye.scot/canoe-kayak-equipment).

At Banavie, visitors can see Thomas Telford's amazing Neptune's Staircase, the longest staircase lock in Scotland.
