FROM DIVINE DIPS AT AGNI THEERTHAM TO THE GHOSTLY SANDS OF DHANUSHKODI, DISCOVER THE SPIRITUAL AND HISTORIC SOUL OF RAMESWARAM

Rameswaram & Dhanushkodi

Suspended delicately over a sheet of blue, bridging sea and sky, the iconic Pamban Bridge was more than just a connection between the mainland and an island. It felt like a passage into a spiritual realm. I arrived in Rameswaram, a name that signifies the sacred act of Lord Rama consecrating a Shiva Lingam here to worship Lord Shiva after the war in Lanka. Here, faith and devotion fill the air, and the ocean cleanses both body and soul.

My first dip was at Agni Theertham, a sacred beach with a fascinating legend. It is said that Goddess Sita, to prove her purity, sat unharmed in a fire lit by Lakshmana. Lord Agni, the fire god, then bathed in the sea here to cleanse himself after touching her, making this spot holy. Bathing at Agni Theertham is believed to wash away all sins, adding a deep spiritual layer to its golden sands and soothing tides.

Joining countless devotees, I made my way to the Ramanathaswamy Temple. Here, Lord Rama is said to have prayed to Shiva after the war to cleanse himself of sins, including slaying Ravana. Legend has it that Sita crafted a Lingam from beach sands, while Hanuman fetched another from the Himalayas. The towering gopuram impressed me, but the temple’s endless corridor was even more striking. Stretching over 1,200 meters, with 1,212 pillars, each 30 feet tall, it is one of the longest temple corridors in the world.
