A team of researchers has announced a major breakthrough in wireless technology: the development of the world's first 6G chip designed to operate seamlessly across all frequency bands.

RESEARCHERS UNVEIL WORLD'S FIRST 6G CHIP CAPABLE OF OPERATING ACROSS ALL FREQUENCY BANDS

The innovation could be a cornerstone for the rollout of sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks, expected to begin commercial deployment by the end of the decade.

While 5G is still being rolled out globally, telecom firms, equipment manufacturers, and research labs have been racing ahead to define the technologies that will power 6G. This new chip could solve one of the central engineering challenges of next-generation wireless: enabling devices to operate reliably on frequencies ranging from today's sub-6 GHz bands to the extreme terahertz (THz) spectrum, which promises unprecedented data speeds and capacity.

WHAT MAKES THE 6G CHIP DIFFERENT

Unlike current 5G chips, which are often optimized for specific frequency ranges, the new 6G chip integrates advanced software-defined radio architecture and adaptive frequency modulation, allowing it to dynamically switch across a wide spectrum without separate hardware modules.

That flexibility is critical for 6G, which aims to combine:

Sub-6 GHz bands for broad coverage and reliability.

imageMillimeter-wave (24-100 GHz) for high-capacity urban networks.

Terahertz spectrum (above 100 GHz) for ultrahigh-speed, ultra-low-latency connections. The chip is also reportedly far more energy-efficient than existing designs, a vital factor given the power demands of terahertz transmission. Researchers say the prototype can reduce energy consumption by up to 40% compared to early 5G modems, an advance that could make 6G devices viable for everyday use.
