Techlife News #710

Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced earlier this week that Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk's SpaceX, will soon commence operations in India. The Department of Telecommunications issued a Letter of Intent to Starlink, signaling progress toward providing high-speed internet connectivity to remote and rural areas.

Scindia confirmed that Starlink is close to receiving its final operating license, with the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACE) as the last regulatory hurdle. The company has until June 7 to meet compliance requirements following the Letter of Intent issued on May 7. Once approved, Starlink will be the third provider to receive a satellite broadband license in India, following Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will establish policy norms for administrative spectrum allocation to govern the commercial rollout.

Starlink operates a network of over 7,000 low Earth orbit satellites, positioned approximately 550 kilometers above Earth, to deliver internet services. The system provides download speeds ranging from 25 to 220 megabits per second and upload speeds from 5 to 20 megabits per second, suitable for streaming, gaming, and video conferencing. Users require a Starlink kit, including a satellite dish, Wi-Fi router, cables, and power supply, which can be self-installed without professional assistance.

The service offers unlimited data on most plans, distinguishing it from traditional satellite providers with data caps.

imageMARKET AND PARTNERSHIPS

Starlink's entry into India follows partnerships with major telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, announced earlier this year. Jio plans to distribute Starlink services through its stores and online platforms, while Airtel aims to integrate Starlink into its network and leverage its infrastructure.
