DC COMICS PUBLISHER JIM LEE TAKES FIRM STAND AGAINST AI-GENERATED ART

DC Comics Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee has made his position on artificial intelligence art unmistakably clear: AI-generated visuals will have no place in DC’s creative pipeline.

DC COMICS PUBLISHER JIM LEE TAKES FIRM STAND AGAINST AI-GENERATED ART

Speaking at New York Comic Con, Lee reaffirmed that the legendary comic book publisher will remain committed to human artists, writers, and colorists in an era where machine-generated imagery is spreading rapidly across creative industries.

A PUBLIC STANCE IN A DIVIDED CREATIVE LANDSCAPE

During his panel, Lee addressed growing concerns among comic creators about the rise of AI tools capable of producing complex illustrations, scripts, and layouts within seconds. He stated plainly that DC will not use AI-generated art in any of its comics, covers, or marketing material — a declaration that drew strong applause from fans and creators in attendance.

“We’re a company built on the creativity of real people,” Lee said. “Every page, every line, every brushstroke comes from human imagination — that’s what connects us to readers. You can’t automate that.”

His comments come as the comic book world wrestles with how to balance technological innovation and artistic integrity. Several independent publishers and fan artists have begun experimenting with AI tools for concept sketches or storyboarding, but many established creators see that trend as a direct threat to artistic livelihoods.
