The Tron effect

Tecno is making moves in the entry-level segment with features that are clearly inspired by new-age icons.

The Tron effect

■ Aiming for a Tron-inspired mech look, the Pova 5 Pro makes a big deal about its Arc Interface which includes four LED strips on the back panel, customizable to sync with music, ringtones, gaming, notifications, start-up, lowbattery and charging. They can be functional, but eventually they just aren’t bright enough to be see outdoors.

■ The twin 50MP cameras are housed in a raised black housing while the branding is subtly etched in a textured panel lower down. It’s a handsome looking back that will garner second looks for sure and it’s only enhanced by chrome-finished flat sides. The “hand feel” isn’t the most comfortable due to its width and chunky sides too.

■ There is a lot of bloatware, including Tecno’s own version of a social media app and most of them are unnecessary. But Social Turbo is an interesting one to supercharge your Whatapp experience while Freeze mode lets you stall unused apps to free up more memory.

■ Mediatek’s 6080 SoC does a great job at gaming and managing everyday apps without any stutters. Even the thermals are well controlled and the battery tech allows you to bypass the charging straight to the motherboard. Clever tech indeed.

Power on

Battery life is great 5000mAh and the capacity is only helped by the 68W fast charging speeds, which is new at this price.
