India's aerospace and defence sector is currently experiencing a significant transformation, moving from a primarily import-heavy industry to a major global manufacturing hub. This shift is driven by a confluence of global and domestic factors, positioning India at an inflexion point in its journey. The change is not a question of “if” but “how fast” and “when” this will fully materialise. India has a knack for tooling and machining in the automotive industry. Industry experts discuss how we are passing the mantle to another rising industry, i.e. aerospace.

A recent catastrophe has drawn widespread attention to the aerospace manufacturing industry. Even a common man is now left wondering about the reasons behind the accidents occurring in air transport, and whether the root cause lies in manufacturing. At the same time, the wars unfolding across the globe are being executed on an unprecedented scale, largely powered by advanced aerospace innovations, with vehicles capable of self-directing themselves to their targets.
While considering the safety and dexterity required to manufacture such intelligent and high-performing systems, aerospace manufacturing necessitates ultra-precision, tight tolerances, and machines that consistently deliver high performance. Achieving this level of sophistication is only possible through the discovery of new materials and the evolving role of advanced tooling and machining systems, which has become more critical than ever. With this feature, we aim to understand the global status of the aerospace industry and explore how innovations in tooling and machining can further accelerate this momentum.
India's aerospace and defence industry
What we have seen lately is a sharp fall in demand followed by a V-shaped recovery in the travel industry, thereby putting immense pressure on supply chains in the West. This, combined with talent attrition in traditional manufacturing hubs, has led global players to seek alternative manufacturing avenues. For a long time, China has been a primary manufacturing base for many industries. However, geopolitical tensions and the sensitive aerospace and defence sectors have altered the strategy. Programs such as China Plus One and other similar government initiatives for striking with one country's supply chains are encouraging, with India having the most potential.

Unlocking machine shop performance with Mobil Solutions
Did you know that 43% of mechanical failures in industrial machinery are due to improper lubrication? That's not all-54% of bearing failures also stem from poor lubrication practices. Imagine how much smoother operations could run by addressing this single issue! In fact, lubrication failures contribute to a staggering roughly 6% of the GDP in repair costs*, equating to over $1 trillion in losses*. In today's fast-paced industrial world, where every second counts and precision is key, companies constantly seek ways to enhance productivity, extend machinery life, and cut operational costs. A critical factor, often overlooked, is lubrication— the unsung hero of industrial efficiency. With machines growing more advanced, the need for specialised lubricants that can withstand extreme conditions is greater than ever.
