Why developers are turning to lightweight solutions in Philippine construction

The construction landscape in the Philippines is evolving. Projects are becoming more performance-driven, and developers and engineers are placing greater emphasis on materials that support tighter timelines, structural efficiency, and precise design requirements.

One material drawing increased attention is geofoam—an engineered lightweight fill used in applications where weight control and predictability are critical.

According to Next Century Building Systems (NCBS), interest in geofoam has grown as project teams look for ways to introduce volume and elevation without imposing unnecessary loads on structures and foundations.

“Lightweight materials are not about replacing traditional methods,” said Jay Ong, president of NCBS. “They are about using the right material for the right function. Geofoam is being evaluated because it allows designers to achieve specific outcomes that would be difficult or inefficient with heavier alternatives.”
