Big Sur brought big problems for the Parallels team. For security reasons, the latest version of the Mac's operating system banned thirdparty kernel extensions, or kexts, something needed for performance by all virtualisation apps. Instead, Apple added its own hypervisor kext to Big Sur and Parallels had to move every kernel extension it used to Apple's own system extensions, something that took over 25 man-years. But they managed it and as a result, Parallels is even faster and more secure than ever before.
