Use of integrated transformer test facilities
EPR Magazine (Electrical & Power Review)
|December 2024
Static Frequency Converter (SFC) is designed to test all types of power and distribution transformers as it provides variable output voltage and variable output frequency.
The use of Integrated Transformer Test Facilities is slowly and steadily gaining ground in the transformer industry for routine, type, and special test requirements as per IEC60076 for all types of power and distribution transformers.
The Integrated Transformer Test Facility (ITTS) is designed to conduct various essential tests on transformers. It enables precise measurements of no-load losses, excitation and harmonic currents, load loss, and short-circuit impedance.
Additional capabilities include temperature rise testing, zerosequence impedance measurement, induced over-voltage and partial discharge (PD) testing, and no-load and on-load OLTC operations. The facility also supports long and shortduration AC tests, making it versatile for comprehensive transformer evaluations.
ITTS incorporates advanced equipment for efficient and accurate testing. Key components include a Static Frequency Converter (SFC) equipped with Sine, EMI, and Common Mode Noise Rejection Filters, all managed via PC-controlled software for streamlined operations.
A Multi-Tapped Step-up Intermediate Transformer with PC-controlled tap selection manages the SFC. At the same time, a Transformer Loss Measuring System leverages a single multi-tapped HV Current Comparator and Standard Capacitor for enhanced accuracy. The facility also features a capacitor bank for reactance compensation, remotecontrolled isolator switches for efficient disconnection, a high-voltage filter for PD applications, and a multi-channel PD detector to support simultaneous testing across multiple phases.
