Apple is preparing its largest manufacturing expansion in India to date, with the upcoming iPhone 17 slated to be assembled across five separate plants in the country.

APPLE EXPANDS IPHONE 17 MANUFACTURING TO FIVE PLANTS ACROSS INDIA, MARKING ITS BIGGEST SHIFT YET AWAY FROM CHINA

The move highlights Apple's determination to diversify production beyond China, while solidifying India as one of its most critical global supply chain hubs. For the Indian government, it marks another milestone in its bid to position the country as a global electronics powerhouse.

FIVE PLANTS, MULTIPLE PARTNERS

Industry sources indicate that Apple's major contract manufacturers-Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics-will split responsibilities across facilities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and other states. Foxconn, Apple's largest assembly partner, is expected to handle the bulk of production through its Chennai operations.

Pegatron is ramping up capacity in Karnataka, while Tata Electronics is emerging as a new force after its acquisition of Wistron's local assets, signaling a growing role in Apple's supply chain.

imageBy distributing production across five facilities, Apple is hedging against potential risks such as labor disputes, component shortages, or regional power outages. This redundancy also allows for faster scaling, ensuring that global launch demand for the iPhone 17 can be met without the severe shortages that have plagued past iPhone releases.

INDIA'S ROLE IN APPLE'S EVOLVING SUPPLY STRATEGY

The decision to deepen investment in India reflects structural shifts in Apple's global manufacturing calculus. China has long been the backbone of iPhone production, but rising labor costs, supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and growing U.S.-China geopolitical tensions have made diversification a priority.

India has quickly emerged as the alternative.
