YouTubers InCamera take us through their approach to a motion-control film project, blending practical effects and VFX wizardry

In Camera is a Bristol-based production and effects studio, comprising special effects wiz James ‘JP’ Price and filmmaker brothers Tommy and Pete Martin. InCamera specialises in the kind of practical effects and approaches to production that, having not died out entirely, have certainly been on the losing end of a battle with CG.

We are not simply ageing nostalgists, pining for the old ways, however. We know the value of good CG and the benefits of VFX, and it’s our belief that the world of practical effects, whether it’s the use of miniatures, pyrotechnics or creating natural environmental elements like fire, wind and water, can be enhanced with a digital approach.

In these articles we’ll be taking you through a project for a real short film that’s currently in pre-production. It’s a project that began over a year ago and has grown from a filmmaker’s request for a proof of concept sequence, to the motion-control shoot we’ll be taking you through.

A bit of background

A Memory Owed is a short film currently in pre-production, written and directed by Martin Hemingway-Moseley. It is a story of remembrance of British Bomber Command and how the events and personal stories of the past can connect with the younger generation of today. The film predominantly follows a Lancaster flight crew during a night-time bombing mission over Germany.
