Steve Hill puts the questions to Rudi Kochanowski, below, the head coach of Hampshire Men's County XV (Division 1)
-
What is your playing background?
I started playing as a seven-year old at my local club Trojans and played all the way through to seniors. I left to play a few seasons in the National Leagues for Basingstoke and Bournemouth before going full circle and playing, and then coaching, back at Trojans.
Why did you get into coaching?
Initially, it was more of an extension of my job as a teacher but I found I really enjoyed it and just kept going back for more and exploring any opportunities that came my way.
Who did you coach/how did you arrive at your current position?
I currently coach in the Foundation Pathway Academy Programme for Bath. Previously I was doing similar for London Irish and then London South Central. Coaching the County XV is really different. It is an opportunity to bring together players from lots of clubs and celebrate the strength of community rugby. I also help coach the Senior Section at Trojans FC alongside Ed Ravenhill and Richard Featherstone.
What is your occupation outside of coaching?
Teacher.
What is your coaching philosophy?
It used to be something where I tried to be really profound but it's now about enabling opportunity and helping players develop in their own way.
What are the major differences/ challenges between coaching at club level and coaching a County team and how do you overcome them?
