IMMEDIATELY after the Western Force game, when Joe McCarthy was brilliant all night and Ollie Chessum excellent off the bench I detected a little wild talk suggesting that Maro Itoje might be pushed to make the Lions starting XV.
Bear in mind also that the Lions can call on Tadhg Beirne and James Ryan in the boiler house.
Such talk was, of course, complete twaddle, born of the 24/7 attention we devote to all Lions tours and the ongoing selection issues. I have no idea if Itoje's finely tuned antenna picked up on such chuntering but against the Reds he quickly took the opportunity to remind all-comers that not only is he the 2025 Lions captain, he remains the main man at lock.
