Top scorer Regan Linney hit the key spot-kick for Alty after Macc captain Paul Dawson’s dismissal in their first meeting since 2016.

“We’re through and that’s all that matters,” said Alty assistant boss Neil Sorvel. “The Trophy is a tournament that we haven’t done well enough in, and so are looking to go far.

“But we were well below par today, too loose with our passing. Credit to Macclesfield, they created some good chances prior to the sending-off, and defended well with ten.”
