THE play-offs may be forward-thinking Worcester City’s priority but boss Chris Cornes would love history to repeat itself in the FA Trophy.
Last season’s Isuzu FA Vase semi-finalists return to Non-League’s premier knockout competition for the first time in seven years having won the Hellenic League Premier Division – and fans of a certain age will know only too well how powerful the pull of the Trophy can be.
City was one of the giants of the semi-pro game throughout the 70s and 80s, reaching the last eight of the first FA Trophy to be contested, in 1969-70, losing 3-1 at home to Telford United in front of more than 6,700 fans at St George’s Lane.
The club’s nomadic status since selling its long-time home resulted in voluntary relegation to Step 5 in 2017 but Cornes, a Worcester lad himself, has started the revival and cannot wait to make his Trophy bow as a manager when City host NPL Midlands rivals Hinckley LR on Saturday.
