Every July, the Tour de France explodes on to the sporting calendar with three weeks of wall-to-wall coverage, iconic mountain battles and drama that keeps even casual fans glued to the screen.

And then... August rolls around.
For many, the weeks after the Tour feel like the sport has hit the brakes. Yes, there are brilliant races like San Sebasti án and the buildup to the Vuelta a Espa ña, but the post-Tour period still feels oddly flat.
