If you’re going to adopt a common storage method across a range of computers, it makes sense to make the hardware as widely compatible as possible – and that’s just what Commodore did with the Datasette, known by the model numbers 1530 and C2N.

The technology was originally integrated into the Commodore PET, but external tape decks soon became available. The model featured here was introduced to match the styling of the new VIC-20, with the form factor retained for years to come with the introduction of new compatible machines such as the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128.
